- We had loyal members:
again join us for this
meeting Fredy Pardo and Xiaolan Zhang. Jerry Hohn also attended representing the
PES/IAS society. The support is appreciated, we invite everyone to continue
attending and encourage getting involved in section activities.
- Treasurer's report:
section's account balance of
$48,842.58 as of the last meeting. We have a very financially sound section.
No rebate from IEEE to date. 5 of the 6 scholarship checks have been sent
out with the last waiting on accompanying letter.
- Secretary's report:
minutes from last month's meeting
had been sent to the executive committee for review. No comments or corrections
were received prior to this meeting. Therefore, minutes were approved and will
be sent to Bob to be posted on the web.
- Chair's report (by Jose this month) :
We are formally
soliciting help for the section's website design and support. Purchased books,
"Volunteers - How to Get Them and Keep Them" for the executive committee members
(total of ten copies). It appears that the vice-chair position will be open
next year (Jose plans to move up to chair), so get the word out to anyone who
might be interested. Any Newsletter items/contributions can be submitted to
Shelley or given to an ex com member. The May 15th PACE event will be
"Consultants Network Seminar" by Gary Blank, held at IUPUI technology
building with registration on-line at cis-ieee website. The August CIS
Indians baseball game is planned for the 15th with your modestly
priced ticket getting you into the game with food and beverage also provided.
Senior member rodeo is planned for June, no activity identified for July yet.
November awards banquet planned for Thursday the 18th. June 26 was date chosen
for senior member rodeo. Activities needed for July, September and October.
Jerry mentioned the 80 MW Anderson power station tour as a possible September
activity, may even combine with a dinner at a local restaurant. The computer
society is also looking at potential tours for this year. An EET student
working for McGraw Hill has suggested a tour of their facility as a possible
activity. The Institute of Forensic Imaging on East Washington near 465
is another potential tour/meeting site.
- Vice-chair's report:
Baseball game planning has started,
deposit is needed within a month. Estimate $11 to $12 per person for picnic.
PACE activity in May. Student chapters are winding down for the end of the semester.
- Society reports:
Computer society is making contact with members to set up events for the year
(focusing on tours and seminars especially computer hardware and computer security).
Computer security topic has been mentioned before and could be good item for seminar
or discussion group. No update on activities of the EMB or signal processing societies.
Power society has just completed the spring short course and student awards banquet,
making plans for the fall and for next year.
- Committee reports:
A suggestion to provide a "logo coffee mug" type incentive for members to
come to the senior member rodeo was offered by Jerry and seemed to have a lot of support.
- Reporter report:
Articles needed for the newsletter. Anything of interest is acceptable,
send material to Shelley Born, Reporter editor or an ex com member.
- Senior members:
Senior member initiative continues. Plan senior member rodeo/roundup in June on
IUPUI campus. Date (Saturday) 26th. Committee has grown to Alan, Jose, Bill,
Bob Adams and me (Tom).
- Student chapters report:
Chapters at IUPUI, Purdue, Rose Hulman, and ITT Tech. Jose Ramos and Ken Reid
serve as liaison/advisors with IUPUI student branch. Ed Wheeler is Rose-Hulman advisor.
Purdue and ITT Tech liaisons remain open.
- EIT 2004 Conference report:
support money pledged, no details to report.
- Website development:
info from and links to student chapters, info from societies and a new
look being implemented.
- EMPHASIZE THAT EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETINGS:
ARE OPEN TO EVERYONE AND TENATIVELY
SCHEDULED FOR THE FOURTH WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH AT 6 PM IN ET 209 ON IUPUI CAMPUS.
- Old business:
Senior member pins from last year, those who didn't make it to the banquet
have not been delivered yet. Need to find mailing or e-mail addresses to contact
and set up delivery. The nominations for the Region 4 awards
(Outstanding Section and Outstanding Member) were completed and submitted by
31 March with no word yet. Best of luck to CIS and Alan.
- New business:
Norbert's suggestion about looking into getting a tour of a TV station
with the installment of HDTV equipment and the proposed change over in
2006 being the driving force is still on the table. Norbert has also
volunteered a Water Company tour as a possible event. Dick Hildreth has
previously mentioned a 80 MW peak shaving power plant coming on line in
Anderson on May 1 as a possible tour site. Rose Hulman ventures had been a
possible tour host in the past and could be followed up for this year.
Trying to get a astronaut from NASA as a Sept/Oct/Nov speaker, could be a big event.
- Next meeting:
scheduled for Wednesday May 26th, IUPUI ET 209 at 6PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Thomas N. Bishop
CIS-IEEE Secretary 2003
